Blog to watch: The Duchess of Devonshire’s Gossip Guide

Member Cheng sent in a link to an interesting and fun blog: The Duchess of Devonshire’s Gossip Guide.  The blogger, Heather Carroll, apparently an art historian, describes it as: Scandalous tid-bits from England’s finest socialite of the Georgian age.

But, it’s more than that. The blog covers topics of interest to us in terms of providing background to the wider Georgian era: fashion, book reviews, quotes from people of the period, and even a “tart of the week” series telling us about people like the murderess Catherine Hayes (born 1690), actress Nancy Dawson (born 1728), wild girl Sophia Heywood (born 1758) and described by Fanny Burney as “most beautiful, but most unhappy”, and the wonderfully named bad-girl Peg Plunkett (born 1727).

It’s not scholarly but seems pretty well researched. Take a look … and thankyou Cheng for finding it.
